Reduce Garden Waste with Help from Hicks Nurseries.
From now until July 15 home gardeners are encouraged to bring in their plastic garden pots, cell packs and trays to be recycled by Hicks Nurseries in Westbury. The program has kept more than 530 yards of plastics out of landfills since 2009.
Home gardeners are asked to collect and sort their plastic garden pots, cell packs and trays and shake out all soil and rocks from the containers and remove metal hangers, rings or other foreign materials before dropping them into the recycling bin. The drop-off bin is located in the Customer Pick-up/Loading Area. All plastic containers collected will be recycled.
Only garden plastics will be accepted. No household plastics, no food plastics, no clay pots, no soil, no metal plant hangers and no plastic bags.
This service is open only to retail customers and is not for commercial or landscaper use.
Prizes will be awarded for heaviest tomato, largest circumference, most unusual and tiniest red tomato. Entries will be accepted at 10 am on the day of the contest only. Judging begins at 11 am. Each contestant can win one category. Tomatoes must be ripe and not frozen or previously frozen.
All children 12 or under are encouraged to bring in their “own-grown” tomatoes. Those who participate receive a Hicks Nurseries Certificate of Achievement.
Our Annual Pumpkin Weigh-Off will be held on Sunday, October 5th. Judging begins at 11 AM. Everyone who has grown a pumpkin – no matter what the size – is encouraged to bring it and show off their growing skills. In addition to awards for the three heaviest pumpkins, we will also award prizes to the ‘Rookie of the Year’ and ‘Best Pumpkin Grown by A Child’ (under the age of 15). Contestants who need to have their pumpkins unloaded must be at the nursery no later than 10 AM.
Christmas begins at Hicks Nurseries with the opening of the Christmas animated story and the arrival of Santa Claus. Santa is available weekdays and weekends for picture taking with your own camera. Additionally, children can mail a letter to Santa in our special North Pole mailbox and get a response! Our real, live reindeer bring smiles to the faces of many children and adults, as well as a serving as a reminder that Santa will be coming to your home soon! Our music on the weekends has become a family favorite.
A warm cup of hot chocolate or cider while picking out your tree in a covered area will become a family tradition.
