One of the questions we hear most often this time of year is ‘Is it time to plant?’ The answer depends entirely on what you want to plant.
Now is the time to plant trees, shrubs, perennials, roses and bulbs in your garden. Cool weather vegetables such as lettuce, kale and carrots should also be planted now. Grass seed loves the cool weather and can also be applied to lawns now.
Annuals such as geraniums and petunias and warm weather vegetables and herbs such as tomatoes, basil, peppers and eggplant should not be planted outdoors until around Mother’s Day. This is when we can be more certain the temperatures will stay warm and plants will not be damaged by frost.
