Learn Landscape or Botanical Art

Artist Harriet Carotenuto teaches how to paint landscapes and flowers and plants using watercolors, in classes starting this July at Hicks Nurseries in Westbury.
The landscape class begins on Saturday, July 12 and meets for five consecutive Saturdays through August 9, from 9:30 am to 1 pm. All skill levels are welcome, from beginner to advanced. The cost is $200 (late registration after July 12 is $225). Supplies are not included in the fee.
A special five-day botanical art program will be held from July 28 through August 1. The class for beginners meets from 9 am to 12:30 pm; the intermediate and advanced class runs from 1 pm to 4:30 pm. The fee is $200 (late registration after July 28 is $225). Supplies are not included in the fee.
Ms. Carotenuto, a professional art teacher for over 25 years, has taught watercolor painting at the nursery for the past six years and is back by popular demand. She holds a BS in Art Education and a Master of Fine Arts degree, as well as a Certificate of Botanical Illustration from the New York Botanical Garden. She is certified to teach “Drawing on the Right Side of the brain.”

All classes are held in The Henry Hicks Learning Center at the nursery and are available on a first come, first served basis.
Participants can register at the nursery’s Customer Service counter at the front of the store.

11th Annual Tomato Contest
Saturday, September 06, 2008, Awards at 11am
Bring your home-grown tomatoes to the 11th Annual Hicks Nurseries Tomato Contest. Tomatoes will be accepted from 8 am to 10:45 am that morning and prizes will be awarded at 11 am for the heaviest, largest circumference, most unusual in appearance and tiniest red tomatoes. No frozen or previously frozen tomatoes will be accepted and tomatoes must be ripe.

Hicks Nurseries is also encouraging children to bring in their “own-grown” tomatoes. Each child, 12 and under, will receive a special certificate. Children may also enter the contest. (Price: FREE)
